Using weight machines or free weights or chopping wood with an axe can accomplish the same end – providing enough resistance against working muscles to sufficiently stress those muscles. This demanding work stimulates increases in strength. Each type of equipment has its advantages, and people will have their own personal preferences based on their objectives or limitations.
