Exercise - When Will I Begin to See Results? Part 1

Medical considerations. Proper exercise induces the body to make a positive adaptation as a form of self-protection. The body becomes stronger when the body is taken beyond the limit of what it can handle. With a variety of exercises there will be more ways to make positive adaptations. Injuries limit the amount of exercise that can be performed and results will be somewhat compromised. At Kelly's Austin Personal Training and at New Orleans Ultimate Fitness trainers we work around those injuries to hopefully get to the point that more exercises can be added to the exercise regime.

Nutritional choices. The biggest changes you will see come from eating less, and eating less is a lot easier than doing hours or exercise. You can run a mile or eat three less Oreos. Eat three less Oreos.

If one were to add two pounds of lean muscle that person would be leaner by a very small percent. If one were to lose twenty pound of fat that person would be leaner by a much larger percent. Try to do both, but note that the biggest change comes from diet, and it is much easier to lose fat than it is to add muscle.

Sex. As a response to proper strength training the body will make a metabolic and a structural change. The metabolic change is an increased capacity for anaerobic exercise (lift more weight) for longer periods without additional muscle. The structural change is an increase in muscle which has the same results - the ability to lift more weight. Women will have more of a metabolic change and less of a structural change by virtue of the fact that they have a faction of the testosterone of a male. Testosterone is one determining factor in one’s ability to add muscle.

Age. We come equipped with fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle. Fast-twitch muscle have a greater ability to undergo hypertrophy (increase in size). As we age, we gradually lose the ability for fast-twitch muscle to undergo hypertrophy. It has been my observation that younger people will see more physical changes, while older people stand to have greater increases in performance and an enhanced feeling of well being.
